My client, a London Borough Council, are currently recruiting for an Internal Communications Officer to join their team in South East London. 

Main purpose of the job:

To develop and lead planned and responsive integrated internal communications activities to inform and engage with the aim of encouraging relationships of mutual understanding, trust and goodwill between the Council and its staff, and key audiences and stakeholders.

Summary of responsibilities and personal duties

- Develop, project manage and implement integrated internal communications plans
- Provide marketing and communications advice
- Take responsibility for the day-to-day management of any apprentice or work experience placement in the communications office, checking volume and quality of work, and supporting their professional development.

- Coordinate internal communications activity

1. Meet with service managers and other colleagues to discuss their internal communication needs and use your knowledge and expertise to advise on the most cost effective communication solutions.

2. Develop productive working relationships with relevant internal and external colleagues with the ability to effectively inform, explain and persuade to resolve problems and reduce conflict, as appropriate.

3. Help promote good practice across all communications, by advising colleagues to ensure that materials follow the Lewisham brand, style and writing guidelines.

4. Provide advice to service managers and other colleagues who contact the communications team for support to resolve internal communication issues.


1. Thorough understanding of communications theories and principles and how to apply them to plan effective campaigns
2. Excellent working knowledge of a range of communications techniques
3. Excellent working knowledge of evaluation techniques and practices in marketing communications
4. Knowledge of local government – how it works and the major challenges it faces
5. Knowledge of project management techniques
6. Good understanding of current affairs
